Telehealth 101

Maybe you’ve seen a new benefit covered by your health insurance called “telehealth,” “telemedicine,” or “virtual care.” What exactly does that mean, and is it right for you?

What is Telehealth?

Telehealth is exactly what it sounds like! Telehealth refers to seeing or speaking to a healthcare practitioner remotely, often over the phone, via video chat, or through a chat box or text messages.

About the differences in language: telehealth, telemedicine, and virtual care all have slightly different meanings, though they all refer to dealing with patients remotely. Many of the differences involve the specific medium, such as video chat vs. text messages. For the purpose of this blog, the term “telehealth” will be used.

While telehealth existed long before the pandemic, its popularity has grown immensely since early 2020. (The Department of Health and Human Services reports that telehealth grew 63-fold from 2019 and 2020.) Now, many more primary care physicians as well as specialists are offering the service.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility varies due to factors such as doctors’ preferences and healthcare plans. Always check with your insurance provider to be sure telehealth sessions are covered! (If you don’t see the term “telehealth,” search for “virtual care” as well.) With your ICBA membership you have the option to sign up for telehealth for just $9.99 per month with a $0 copay.

Telehealth is especially useful for people who may have to travel long distances to see a doctor or arrange for childcare. Depending on the format, telehealth requires certain technological devices. A stable internet connection and a smartphone or computer may be necessary for video chatting with a healthcare provider. Some appointments can be conducted over the phone, so telehealth may still be available to you even if you aren’t the techiest person.

What types of conditions can be treated by Telehealth?

Telehealth is an effective way to diagnose and/or treat many conditions, such as:

  • Migraines
  • Certain dermatological issues
  • Respiratory infections such as colds, the flu, and COVID-19
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Digestive problems

It can also be a great choice for:

  • Birth control prescriptions
  • Post-surgical follow-ups
  • Prescription refills
  • Counseling/therapy, including stress management, anxiety, and depression

Telehealth is not sufficient for emergency situations. Additionally, any condition that requires an X-ray, lab work, or hands-on care can only be handled in-person.

What are the benefits of Telehealth?

Telehealth offers many benefits, including:

  • Convenience
  • Control of infectious diseases
  • Potential price reduction
  • Reduced or eliminated need to secure childcare for parents of young children

The biggest benefit to a virtual approach is the smaller time commitment, with no waiting rooms or commute. You are able to have a doctors visit on a lunch break, during some downtime at work, or even later in the evening with some providers like MDLIVE offering support 24/7.
